Collision Investigation

Valley Traffic Division’s collision investigators (CI) respond to collisions that occur throughout the San Fernando Valley area, excluding the incorporated cities of San Fernando and Burbank. Expertise is abundant at VTD with Traffic Accident Reconstruction (TAR) graduates from institutions that include Northwestern and Texas A&M Universities.

VTD regularly trains probationary officers as well as newly transferred officers into VTD. We use the standard CHP 555 reports that are used throughout the state of California.

VTD does not investigate collisions where only property is damaged (PDO) unless a crime occurs, city property is involved, or there is potential city liability. There are approximately 100 police officers and supervisors currently assigned to Collision Investigation (CI) at VTD.

Some VTD officers are assigned to the Specialized Collision Investigation Detail (SCID). These officers are often called to roll out to complicated collision scenes throughout the entire metropolitan Los Angeles area. During a typical month, Valley Bureau officers handle approximately 1,000 traffic collisions. VTD units generally handle 90% or more of these calls.
